Senate Bill (SB) 343 (Allen) directs CalRecycle to publish a material characterization study by January 1, 2024. This contract is to conduct a study is to provide representative data and information on which material types and forms are collected, sorted, sold, or transferred by processing facilities (e.g., Material Recovery Facilities) throughout the state, and to evaluate whether a product or packaging is recyclable in the state. Forms are defined here as the shape or physical configuration of the object made of a given material. This study will provide up-to-date information on the types and amounts of material types and forms that are being sent for recovery in the states recycling stream. Information from this study will be used in several CalRecycle efforts, including providing the public with information to help evaluate whether the chasing arrows symbol can be used on products or packaging pursuant to SB 343. The method of contractor selection has not been determined at this time.
