The City of Santa Cruz Water Department (City) intends to convert its existing production wells Beltz 8 and Beltz 12 to aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) wells. Pilot testing was conducted at Beltz 12 in 2019 and at Beltz 8 in 2020-2021; further study of the operational characteristics of the wells as ASR facilities began in January 2022 and is anticipated to continue through Summer 2023. Ancillary studies are underway or planned to evaluate the suitability of other City-owned production wells for conversion to ASR wells. The City is seeking proposals from qualified engineering firms interested in providing design engineering and bidding assistance services required for this project. Services include developing construction plans, specifications, and bid documents for demolishing and/or retrofitting the existing well pumps, discharge and facility piping, mechanical and electrical components and equipment, controls and SCADA integration, and associated appurtenances of the permanent ASR well facilities per City of Santa Cruz guidelines. Engineering analysis will include determination of recharge flow-control mechanism, ASR well hydraulics, and best practices for converting an existing production well to and ASR well. The design of Beltz 8 and 12 facilities should take into consideration future growth of the City’s ASR program and additional ASR wells being brought online.
