Reference Number : 1714299 Deadline for receipt of complaints: 2023-05-17 Submission sent electronically accepted: Yes, in a single submission document Description CONTEXT Higher education institutions are important actors in the sustainable transformation of our economy and our societies. Their missions revolve around learning, basic and applied research, and innovation through technological spin-offs and start-ups. Their activities and facilities are able to serve as a testing ground for many subjects. These interdisciplinary crossroads of resources and knowledge are a privileged place of life, collaboration, experimentation, teamwork and teaching. They are therefore conducive to the creation of innovation ecosystems, true drivers of technological and social change. It is in this context and in accordance with its Sustainability Action Plan1 that Concordia University has decided to launch its PLAN/NET-ZERØ project, namely the decarbonization of its two campuses. The objective of PLAN/NET-ZÉRØ is to transform Concordia's physical facilities into a living laboratory, a place where we accelerate the emergence and deployment of solutions related to climate issues. Global vision of the PLAN/NET-ZERØ project To be spread over a period of ten (10) to fifteen (15) years and to be carried out in several phases, the transformation of the Concordia campuses aims to use the transdisciplinary approach of the living laboratory. The project aims to transform the physical facilities of the University into a test bed offering an ideal environment for the development of scalable and transferable solutions to future generations in order to be able to face climate issues. The PLAN/NET-ZÉRØ project will make campuses a space for co-creation that can include all institutional, public, industrial and private actors ready to pool their efforts to address current and future climate issues. This is about encouraging co-production, prototyping, experiential learning, research, validating and implementing user- and environmental-focused solutions that are desirable, viable and achievable for our society. Ultimately, this project should enable the creation of a community-driven innovation center that combines technological and social innovation. At the same time, this living laboratory will make it possible to demonstrate and evaluate innovative solutions to combat climate change at the local level. In addition, this project constitutes a strategic lever for the improvement of the University's infrastructures. PLAN/NET-ZÉRØ's ultimate vision is to create for both campuses, upon completion of all phases, a scaled-down version of an urban system, for a sustainable, resilient and carbon-free University. PLAN/NET-ZÉRØ aspires to set up an innovative ecosystem in the heart of Montreal around the issues of decarbonization and sustainability. It aims to generate industrial partnerships with both large and small and medium-sized enterprises. Concordia's living lab, in a context of green innovations, will provide an ideal environment to nurture venture capital start-ups that support energy and climate change efforts. Such an ecosystem combining the activities of economic, governmental, research, innovation, management and teaching actors in the same physical place will allow not only technological, but also behavioral and community evolution. PLAN/NET-ZÉRØ will inspire an evolution that will have an impact on all nine strategic vectors of Concordia2 as a new generation University. This development will lead to a new, more developed profile of expertise in terms of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and combating climate change. Learning from the living laboratory can be used to update or create study programs. Thus, for Concordia, PLAN/NET-ZÉRØ and the progressive implementation of its phases represent the most important action of the University in its commitment to fight against global warming. It will not only adapt university education, but also align the skills required in sustainable development for the next generation of decision-makers and managers.
