This project consists of Phase 2 Engineering for Stage 2 of the Prairie Street Reconstruction Project. The first stage of the project was completed in 2020. The project limit is from approximately Webster St. northward to the Wilson Street intersection. The scope of this project is to complete reconstruction including curb/gutter, bituminous pavement, storm sewer, lighting, sidewalk, railroad crossing gates and new railroad signals on Praire Street and Wilson Street and signalization of the Prarie and Wilson Street intersection. Wilson St. is a major arterial route through the city. Prairie St. is a major collector roadway. Both roadways are in poor condition throughout the project limits. Phase 2 engineering is to be completed in 2022 with bid letting expected in Spring 2023. Construction is projected to start in summer 2023, depending on IDOT, ICC and Railroad approvals. The construction portion of this project is funded at a Federal 70% and Local 30% match. The City was awarded $1.7 million in STP funds to go towards design and construction, and $852,000 pass-through funds to the railroad from the Illinois Commerce Commission to improve this intersection. With STP funding, the design and construction engineering are paid by the city and the city applies for reimbursement from the state. The state will let the construction contract and bill the city for the construction. The total cost to the city for this project As of March 14, 2024, project is included in the City's FY2023-2027 CIP report. Construction on the Prairie and Wilson Street intersection is planned to begin in late February 2024. The Illinois Department of Transportation and the City of Batavia have hired a construction team, to complete the project with an expected completion date of November 2024. Federal, state, and local funds will be used for the project. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
