This program provides for new signal installations and/or traffic signal upgrades. Project includes upgrading older traffic signals that use overhead span wires to a steel mast arm traffic signal design. Mast arm signals remove all overhead wires and improve safety by placing traffic signals in-line with road lanes to reduce the rate for red light running. Mast arm signals are also better suited to withstand damage from tropical storms and hurricanes as well as generally have lower maintenance costs than span wires reducing operating budget expenses. Other traffic signal upgrades may include emergency vehicle preemption (EVP) detectors, thermal vehicle detection, structural inspections and maintenance. The program also funds new mast arm traffic signals at existing un-signalized intersections that meet the federal warrants and are supported by a City Engineering study. As of March 11, 2024, this project is included in the city’s 2023-2027 Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
