Reference Number 0000326734 The Town of Orangetown operates a 13 MGD Design Flow Wastewater Treatment Plant in Orangeburg, NY. A Part of the operation includes dewatering combined Primary/Secondary sludge through the use of a Belt Filter Press from a sludge storage tank. The sludge is typically between 2% and 4% Solids. The type of sludge and the storage of the sludge prior to dewatering results in the formation of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S). The H2S becomes airborne during the dewatering process with levels in the air being measured between 11 ppm and 50 ppm prior to treatment. The oxidation of H2S for removal has been performed at the plant for odor control and for health and human safety. This has been treated effectively with a range of chemicals over the years. The chemical list included: Potassium Permanganate Sodium Permanganate 40% solution Peracetic Acid/Peroxide solution 18% / 27% Hydrogen Peroxide 50% Some of the chemical used historically required more maintenance or specialized dosing equipment.
