The District of Kitimat owns an operational landfill, the Kitimat landfill. The landfill is authorized to store, handle, treat and discharge municipal waste, and operates under Permit 3608, issued by the British Columbia Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy (BC MECCS). The permit requires quarterly field sampling of groundwater and surface water in and around the landfill site. The permit also requires scheduled headspace monitoring for landfill gases. The District of Kitimat has been operating the landfill approximately five kilometers Northwest of Kitimat under Permit 3608 since it was first issued in 1975. As Provincial requirements have changed and improved, to address adverse environmental degradation, environmental field sampling and groundwater and surface water monitoring requirements have also evolved and increased. The Landfill's field monitoring campaigns help us to plan and mitigate for adverse impacts to our natural environment and organisms surrounding the landfill.
