As of May 30, 2025, an engineer firm has been selected and this project is in the design phase. A firm timeline for construction has not been determined. *The closed solicitation has been included below for reference: The Columbus Recreation and Parks Department (CRPD) is seeking proposals from qualified consulting firms for professional planning and design services for the Big Walnut Trail, from Refugee Road to East Main Street. The 3.5 mile project will be the central extension of the Big Walnut Trail, from Nafzger Park on Refugee Road, to the north end of Big Walnut Park at East Main Street. Responding consultant teams shall be capable of demonstrating excellence in public engagement, NEPA-level environmental assessments, civil engineering, and sustainable, cost-effective design and project delivery. It is the intent of CRPD that this project design will be developed as a two stage contract. Stage One of the contract will complete preliminary engineering, environmental studies, and community outreach. Upon successful completion of Stage One, the City will negotiate a scope and fee for a Stage Two contract modification to complete the detailed design and construction plans for successful bidding of the trail project.
