It marked the lowest since the height of the pandemic in 2021. The same goes for vacation rentals, which were down 2% from those years. (WLOS) -- According to the North Carolina Department of Commerce, visitor spending throughout the Tar Heel State is up 7%. Asheville plays a big part in that. "[Visitors] find us by coming to camp here or they come to a conference here," Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Kit Cramer said Thursday, May 30. "There are cities across this country that would kill to have what we have in terms of the natural beauty of this place." That makes money of which downtown organizations can make good use. "Visitors contribute about $3 billion in local spending for our area," said Vic Isley, Explore Asheville president and CEO. "That means they also contribute about 20% of the revenues for our city and county budgets. They also contribute to our tax base. That helps our county and city provide services to us as residents." 'TODAY WAS A HISTORIC DAY:' BUNCOMBE COUNTY TDA COMMITS NEARLY $10 MILLION TO PROJECTS Promoted Links As a clerk, I can't afford his life-saving surgery. Help! Donate For Health That's why organizations like Explore Asheville use their fiscal budgets to upgrade different aspects of the city. Earlier this week, Explore presented the FY 2025 budget to the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority. "That $3 billion in spending throughout Asheville and Buncombe County is just behind Mecklenburg County, which has Charlotte, and Wake County, which has Raleigh," Isley said. "Asheville and Buncombe County does punch above its weight in terms of the visitor economy." In FY 2025, more than $15 of the $27.3 million will go towards a specific improvement aspect. DESPITE SLOWER 2024 START, ASHEVILLE TOURISM SHOWS FLUCTUATING TREND, NOT DOWNTURN "There is more going into community capital projects," Isley said. "Those are great for quality of life, amenities for residents, as well as visitors. That ranges from Pack Square Park, to the John B. Lewis soccer field, to the McCormick Field renovation that gets started at the end of this season." If those potential improvements continue to impress visitors, they only help larger downtown organizations. "We consider [Explore Asheville] close partners on economic development because that's what they're doing," Cramer said. "We can thank tourism for building our brand and name recognition for Asheville." ______________________________________________ The project will consist of a renovation and addition to the existing +/-4,000 seat ballpark. Project scope will include a variety of renovated or new player facilities, a new natural grass field and upgraded sports lighting. The project will feature many new or renovated fan amenities including new seating areas, new comfort facilities, a new team store and new LED scoreboard.
