The Abandoned Mines Branch requires the services of qualified professional engineers to conduct Dam Safety Reviews (DSRs) and Annual Facility Performance Reviews (AFPRs, previously referred to as Dam Safety Inspections) for two Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs). Dam Safety Reviews are required during the first year of the contract and Annual Facility Performance Reviews are required for the subsequent 4 years for each site. These TSFs are located at abandoned mines in remote areas of southeast and northeast BC with no on-site presence of personnel. Both TSFs were decommissioned and reclaimed according to the standards of the day and the permits were closed. These will be the first DSRs and AFPRs completed for these facilities; however, preliminary geotechnical field assessments were completed for each facility in 2023 and limited historical design, construction and inspection documentation is available.
