Project work will consist of a mill and overlay on K-18/K-15 from the K-18/K-15 west junction to the K-15/K-18 east junction in Dickinson County and K-197 from Industry to K-15 in Clay County. (See map.) During construction, flaggers and a pilot car will guide one lane of traffic through construction at a reduced speed during daylight hours. Drivers should be prepared for a delay of up to 15 minutes and plan extra time in their travel schedules. Shilling Construction Co., of Manhattan, is the prime contractor for this $982,000 project, which is scheduled to be completed in July, weather permitting. KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones. For current road conditions, visit www.kandrive.gov or call 5-1-1. At a work session, prior to the March 27 meeting, Sheriff Jerry Davis said the vehicle is needed to allow deputies to go off-road to crime or accident scenes, which are inaccessible by a patrol vehicle. He said payment for the vehicle would come from asset forfeiture funds. They had received several bids, including some from local vendors but the one from Wichita Tractor, for $41,805, best met their needs. However, commissioners asked whether they had also sought a bid from Kan Equip, Davis said they had not. Commissioners approved the purchase contingent on the Sheriff’s office first finding out if Kan Equip could meet or beat Wichita Tractor’s bid. This is part of the commission’s ongoing effort to support local businesses whenever possible, Commission Chair Kenny Roelofsen said. In other business; • Commissioners approved the project agreement for the replacement of a 93-year-old truss bridge at 1060 1900 Avenue, which had been damaged about two years ago. “We lowered the load rating on that and had some repairs made, but we still had to keep it that low,” said County Administrator Janelle Dockendorf. “This is part of the project that we would like to move forward with from K-15 to Jeep Road, straighten that curve out, build that bridge up and maybe make a bypass to help with some of the truck traffic.” The project is funded through the state with a 90/10 match. Construction costs are not expected to exceed $1.230 million, which is the limit imposed by the Kansas Department of Transportation. Ten percent of the cost along with design and tree clearing is the county’s responsibility and is estimated in the $400,000 range. • Commissioners signed the Authority to Award Contract of County Funds for the bridge at 1160 1100 Avenue. The contract, for $1.264 million, was awarded to L & M Contractors. The out-of-pocket expense is anticipated to be about $224,000. ______________________________________ County : Clay Total Length (Miles) : 11.9 Name : Clay county k-15: safety improvements Location : K-15 in clay county beginning at the north city limits of clay center, north to the clay/washington county line Scope : Clear zone improvements: shoulder widen, grading, structure extensions and pipe replacements As of November 7 , 2025, the project is in Conceptual status.
