Reference Number 0000275670 Question Deadline 08/20/2024 at 5:00 PM ET The development of UW's Waterloo Campus, has evolved over 60+ years, including the renovation, expansion and repurposing of existing buildings and the construction of new buildings. As a result, the heating and cooling systems comprise various technologies, age, complexity, efficiency, and design philosophy. The DE system also evolved over time, expanding a complex network of utility tunnels within Ring Rd. that deliver steam and chilled water to core campus buildings from one centralized steam heating plant and several nodal chilled water plants. The main objective of the District Energy Study (DES) was to develop a strategic direction for UW's District Energy (DE) heating and cooling infrastructure, equipment, and systems to meet the short, medium, and long-term carbon reduction targets set out in its Environmental Sustainability Strategy and Climate Action Plan. Consideration was given to the current energy needs of DE-connected buildings, future energy needs of DE-connected buildings (future campus growth), energy efficiency, sustainability, implementation phasing, flexibility, resilience, robustness, redundancy, capability and age/condition of existing assets and infrastructure, integration of future technologies, and perspectives of UW staff and faculty through stakeholder consultation sessions.
