The Iowa Department on Transportation wanted to demolish the old Lansing Bridge, a 1,702-foot, cantilever bridge connecting Lansing, Iowa with western Wisconsin, by the time its replacement will be complete in two years. However, the department will close and demolish the bridge in fall 2025 to make way for its replacement less than 100 feet away on the Mississippi River. Known as the Black Hawk Bridge, the Lansing Bridge was completed in 1931 and connects Iowa Highway 9 and Wisconsin Highway 82 over the Mississippi River. The only other connections between Wisconsin and other states across the river are La Crosse and Prairie du Chien, which are roughly 60 miles apart. In 2023, Plain-based Kraemer North America started work on a 1,724-foot replacement bridge, which is underway alongside the existing bridge. Iowa’s DOT, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the contractor determined future construction stages could pose a risk to the safety of the existing bridge, officials said. An exact closure date hasn’t been announced yet. The existing bridge will remain open throughout the summer, but it saw two surprise closures in early 2024 and May 2025 after its piers shifted due to new construction. Replacement will cost a total of $140 million, officials said. Federal money will cover around 80% of the cost of the bridge and the states will split the remaining costs, officials added. The new steel through-truss bridge will include a 40-foot road width, a reinforced concrete deck and 150-foot foundations.
