The project will replace pavement for roughly one mile of roadway, increase the size of sidewalks and further distance the sidewalks from the main road. The Gilbert Street Bridge reopened just before calendars flipped to 2025, ending a protracted construction project that began earlier this spring. The bridge was slated to open in the late fall and nearly all of the work was completed by that deadline, but supply delays for the metal railings pushed the reopening date back. The $4.4 million project to reconstruct the bridge stemmed from a report deeming it "structurally deficient." The Iowa City City Council moved to approve funding to replace the bridge in early 2023. The bridge fully reopened to all vehicle traffic on Dec. 31. Bridge improvements include resurfaced roadway, expanded sidewalk The 50-plus-year-old road surface that makes up the bridge was completely reconstructed for this project. As part of the work, crews worked on a six-foot-wide sidewalk area with a concrete barrier for additional pedestrian protections. Streambank stabilization for Ralston Creek, which runs under the bridge, and water main improvements also took place around the bridge as part of this project. Storm drains were revamped to provide increased water draining capacity around the bridge and avoid the formation of puddles during heavy rain. Transit detours end with the construction Six Iowa City Transit stops were disrupted when the project began last spring. The project is located on Court Street between Muscatine Avenue and 1st Avenue in Iowa City, Iowa. In addition, a separate sealed envelope shall be submitted containing a completed Bidder Status Form and a bid security executed by a corporation authorized to contract as a surety in the State of Iowa, in the sum of 10% of the bid.
