(FOX Carolina) - The Flowering Bridge organization said some surprise funding will help rebuild an iconic pedestrian bridge between Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Village. The organization said FEMA unexpectedly announced dozens of Hurricane Helene-related recovery projects on Sept. 16, which included a grant for the bridge construction. The beloved Flowering Bridge was demolished over the summer after suffering irreparable structural damage during the hurricane. Plans for a new bridge were uncertain after officials said earlier in September that the FEMA funding they had already received would be needed for other infrastructure priorities like the dam, sewer system and public safety. “In addition to providing the much needed, safe pedestrian connector between our two towns for the the use of residents and visitors alike, the new bridge will once again tie together our east and west end gardens to allow us to begin restoring the Flowering Bridge to its past splendor,” the organization announced. Officials said the new grant will only go toward construction of the pedestrian walkway. The Flowering Bridge Organization is raising funds to rebuild the gardens and complete the Education Center.
