The Department of Codes Compliance is responsible for enforcement of Chapter 13 of the Newport News Municipal Code. Consistent with this responsibility, Codes Compliance is responsible for ensuring that grass is maintained at certain maximum heights to prevent conditions that are considered to be detrimental to the health, safety, peace, good order, comfort, convenience, morals, or general welfare of the citizens of the city. Grass in excess of ten (10) inches on property that lies within one hundred fifty (150) feet of any building, and grass or weeds exceeding a height of fifteen (15) inches, regardless of their location, are violations of municipal ordinance 13-150 of the Virginia Property Maintenance Code and Newport News Municipal Code.
