Site work for a civil project in Denver, Colorado. Completed plans call for site work for a bridge / tunnel; road / highway; and water / sewer project.
The Brooklyn Ponds and Level One Project is located approximately 6 miles northwest of Silverton on U.S. Forest Service Road (NFSR) 825 (Figure 1 - Brooklyn Location Map) at an elevation of about 11,450 feet. Mining began in the late 1800s and continued intermittently into the 1990s. As shown in Figure 2 - Brooklyn Mine Area Features, the site consists of four adit levels, mined material (waste rock), exploration pits, two small settling ponds, support buildings, and a backfilled and reclaimed "glory hole". The primary workings are on Level 1 and Level 2. The Level 2 portal and adit are located on lands managed by the United States Forest Service (USFS), with several private claims to the north and east of the site. All site features under this project are near NFSR 825 and accessible with machinery. WORK SUMMARY The project work will include the following general work tasks: _ Installing Stormwater Controls _ Preparing a Safety Plan _ Preparing a Traffic Control Plan _ Draining and treating the water from two tailings ponds _ Amending the pond sediments/tailings with Quicklime _ Hauling amended pond sediments to the Level One Waste Rock Consolidation area and mixing them with angular waste rock for geotechnical stability. _ Backfilling the ponds with on-site material and revegetating _ Installing a dispersed camping area in the reclaimed ponds area. _ Excavating and amending a corner of the Level One Waste Rock with limestone crusher fines due to groundwater encountered during site investigations. _ Amending the Level One Waste Rock with a top barrier of limestone crusher fines to neutralize the waste rock and minimize mobilization of metals leaching due to precipitation from snow and rain. _ Repairing the road to the Quarry area on the lower levels of the Brooklyn site for hauling cover material to the Level One Consolidation area. _ Capping the Level One Consolidation area with Burns formation talus and cover material that has a high buffering capacity (higher pH) and revegetating. _ Reinstalling run-on controls across the site to divert water away from waste rock and protect the newly installed remedies.
