Renovation of an educational facility in Vancouver, British Columbia. Completed plans call for the renovation of a educational facility.

The proposed Kenny Building Targeted Seismic Upgrade project is designed to significantly reduce seismic risk on campus and improve the Kenny building life safety for building occupants. The Kenny Building Targeted Seismic Upgrade Project aligns with UBC’s strategic priorities in enhancing campus safety, risk management, and operational continuity. The project aims to reduce the building’s seismic risk from Tier V to Tier III or better by implementing targeted structural interventions, ensuring a safer environment for its occupants while preserving the building’s operational integrity during and after seismic events. The structural interventions will require the vacating of program spaces in the immediate vicinity of the work, in addition to adjacent spaces that will not be able to continue operating while the construction activity is ongoing. For reference UBC has completed a concept retrofit study of the Seismic Interventions anticipated for the building which is to form the basis for the project and demonstrated the areas of the building targeted for seismic upgrades. UBC acknowledges that the concept retrofit study is open to interpretation and reconceptualization by the design team. The areas of the building affected by the structural work, as well as any mechanical and electrical services that are disrupted by the work will need to be documented by the project team and returned to their existing condition (or better) following completion of the seismic work. The extent of building users to be displaced is to be minimized by carefully isolating the targeted seismic interventions to limit disruption of occupants remaining in the building during construction. The project will also incorporate renovations to swing space locations on campus, intended to provide temporary home to any users/labs/clinics/offices displaced by the proposed seismic work. Currently, the preliminary estimate for Swing Space is to find existing space in other buildings not yet confirmed that can accommodate the following: Labs: 6800 sqft (most with sensitive AV equipment and high-level acoustics) Offices: 5775 sqft (offices, meeting rooms, grad spaces, etc) Note: these are total areas and the labs and offices will be spread out over multiple spaces and buildings. The assumption can be made that generic existing dry space will be for office spaces with minor renovations needed and existing wet spaces would be used for labs with the majority of renovations focusing on retrofitting specialized equipment (mostly AV equipment) and acoustically separating spaces.
