Centennial Square is located in Downtown Victoria, fronting Douglas Street to the East and with Pandora Avenue to the South. To the North, the square extends to the edge of the existing Centennial Parkade structure which has sunken office spaces at the ground floor. The Capital Regional District (CRD) office building is to the North-West. The McPherson Playhouse heritage building flanks the square to the West and City Hall flanks the South edge. Pedestrian walkways connect Centennial Square with Fisgard Street, Government Street and Pandora Avenue. The site is located in a highly visible, multi-modal downtown traffic environment. The project site is approximately 0.5 ha in size. This project involves the partial demolition of the existing urban plaza and the construction of a revitalized public space, organized into three distinct zones as outlined in the Design Concept Report: The Civic Plaza, The Heart, and The Expanded Green. The Civic Plaza Located on the upper-level facing Douglas Street, this area will feature a hardscaped plaza that includes: A bosque of trees planted in soil cells to provide high quality uncompacted soil volumes for tree roots Landscaped planting beds Seating and site furnishings Architectural lighting A Centennial Square entrance sign feature at the Douglas Street frontage Relocation of the existing concrete mosaic Monoliths (public art by J.C.S. Wilkinson), previously part of the Centennial Fountain The Heart This is the central plaza and focal point of the project. It includes: A recirculating interactive water feature with an underground mechanical room Custom-designed light poles to support both daily use and event lighting A terraced performance zone with a wood deck stage and integrated seating Rock features, planting areas, and concrete planters Seating and furnishings Accessible concrete ramps connecting to the upper plaza Designed as a flexible, multi-use space, The Heart includes servicing infrastructure to accommodate future washroom facilities and a commercial kiosk in the square.
