The city is advertising for bids for the construction of a single-lane roundabout. Currently, traffic at the intersection is controlled by stop signs. "We are building a roundabout at this intersection to improve operations and safety," said Aimee Hayden, communications manager for the city. "There is an all-way stop control there now, and the roundabout will improve traffic flow, enhance safety and reduce delay." The Georgia Department of Transportation has been promoting roundabouts as an alternative to traffic lights to improve traffic flow and safety. On its website, it lists safety benefits of roundabouts, including reduced speeds and eliminating the potential for right-angle and head-on collisions. The city is taking bids through June 12, and the project is expected to start in August. "This roundabout will have three approaches initially, until such time the large tract of land abutting Poplar Road is developed," Hayden said. "That development will add a fourth approach." The project will be paid with special-purpose local-option sales tax revenue, Hayden said. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This project Consists of constructing a single lane roundabout at the intersection of Newnan Crossing Blvd E and Stillwood Dr within the City Limits of Newnan, Georgia. Currently, vehicular traffic is controlled via stop signs. In addition to constructing the roundabout, modifications to the existing storm drainage system and adjacent sidewalks will be required. The project also involves relocation of water and sanitary sewer service lines as well as relocation of public utilities such as power, gas and phone.
