Unwin Park is a 15-hectare (36 acre) park located in Newton, Surrey. The park offers a variety of amenities, including sports fields, playgrounds, a water park, outdoor pool, lacrosse boxes, and a games court. The park is well-used and valued by residents, but some of the amenities are outdated, underutilized, or in need of improvement. Over the years, adjacent parcels of land have been acquired to facilitate future growth of the park. There is opportunity to review its programing through an equitability lens and recent learnings from the City's neighbourhood wide campaign (Focus Newton Action Plan). The park also faces challenges, such as limited parking, accessibility issues, and conflicts between different user groups. TIMELINE: Request for Proposals is underway by The Parks Division, seeking a Proponent and its team with expertise in park planning and design, community engagement, and landscape architecture to develop a master plan for Unwin Park. The master plan will include a vision, a final master concept plan with supporting plans, diagrams, and images, and design guidelines for the future re-development of the park. The master plan will reconfigure the existing amenities and add new ones to meet the current and future needs of the park users and the community. The master planning process will need extensive community engagement with existing park users, sports groups, the public, and internal City stakeholders. Experience working on high-profile parks with a wide variety of established existing user groups and a diversity of resident needs will be an asset; collaboration between firms may be required to fulfill all project needs.
