On September 16th, 2020 Sally made landfall as a Category 2 Hurricane near Gulf Shores, Alabama. The Pensacola Bay Fishing Pier was impacted by multiple Pensacola Bay Bridge construction barges broken from moorings during the hurricane. The purpose of this project is to demolish the existing pier and construct the new along the same alignment. The purpose of this project is to replace the Pensacola Bay Fishing Bridge which was damaged by multiple construction barges during Hurricane Sally. This fishing bridge is located at 30.4148N, 87.1922W and extends out from Wayside Park into Pensacola Bay on the east side of the U.S. 98 Bridge over Pensacola Bay (General Chappie James Memorial Bridge). The existing 2,578 feet long, 24 feet wide fishing bridge and approach structures will be demolished with debris deposited in permitted artificial reefs or taken to permitted landfills. The new fishing bridge will be approximately the same size and will be constructed along the same alignment as the existing structure with bent locations adjusted to avoid existing piles. The bridge will use precast concrete double tee beams, pile caps and piles with cast-in-place closure pours. Precast concrete light pedestals, poles, and luminaires will be installed to provide pedestrian deck lighting and below deck fishing lights will be installed to attract fish. Class V applied finish and anti-graffiti coatings will be applied and regulatory and instructional signage will be installed along the length of the fishing bridge. Aluminum railing will meet the recommendations of the American with Disabilities Act Guidelines for Recreation Facilities. Work activities include: demolition of existing structures, sub-bottom profiling, debris removal, pile driving, cast-in-place concrete abutment and approach slab, installing precast pile caps, installing precast beams, welding beam flange connectors, placing high-strength grout, cast-in-place closure pours, placing precast light pedestals, installing electrical lines, light poles, and luminaires, signing and pavement markings, riprap installation, earthwork, concrete curbs, asphalt placement, milling and resurfacing and other miscellaneous activities. Pedestrian traffic to the U.S. 98 bridge and emergency vehicle access underneath the bridge will be maintained during construction. This project is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and will meet all FEMA requirements.
