This project will provide funding to install bicycle facilities on selected corridors based on recommendations from the Active Transportation Plan. Cost estimates include engineering, design, mobilization, furnishing, and installation costs for painted sharrows, bike lanes, and restriping where necessary. The project is split into phases with selected corridors being marked each year. The project implements recommendations of the Active Transportation Plan completed for Sioux City by the Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities as part of the community policy requirements to become a Blue Zones Designated Community. The plan shows that Sioux City has one of the highest relative fatality rates in Iowa caused from vehicle and pedestrian/bicyclist accidents. The requested improvements will improve safety for bicyclists by making drivers more aware of their presence. Corridors for improvements were selected based on terrain, on-going projects, existing infrastructure (traffic control devices, width, parking area), and the ease of implementation. The project budget may be reduced significantly by completing improvements in conjunction with other pavement projects for design and engineering costs. All cost estimates are for the most preferred method of bicycle improvements. As of June 14, 2025, this project is included in the City's 2025-2030 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
