With its stable residential neighborhoods, its historic districts, and its proximity to Washington, D.C., the City continues to attract new residents, tourists, and businesses. The Duke Street in Motion initiative is a multi-phased effort focused on developing bus transit improvements in the Duke Street corridor, from West End Alexandria to the King Street Metrorail Station, to provide transportation options that align with the community's needs, provide efficient transportation choices, and keep the region moving. The process from June 2021 to July 2023 resulted n identification of a Preferred Alternative for transit improvements in the corridor, along with additional multimodal improvements for those walking, biking, and rolling. The Duke Street Transitway will provide increased driver safety from separating buses from general traffic, faster and more reliable bus service, wider sidewalk, separate paths from bikes, safer intersections and an overall more pleasant experience for all users of the Duke Street corridor.
