https://theconstructionbroadsheet.com/granite-wins-m-caltrans-roadway-widening-contract-p2167-175.htm Granite Construction Inc. said Wednesday that the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has selected the company for an approximately $66 million contract for improvements to State Route (SR) 49 in Nevada County, California. The project will widen SR 49 to four lanes with a center turn lane, Granite said. The finished project is expected to improve safety, traffic flow and local access on the roadway. The project, according to Granite, also will include: A truck climbing lane for improved freight mobility; Accessibility improvements to multiple driveways and side streets; Drainage improvements to support long-term roadway durability; and A wildlife crossing box culvert to protect local ecosystems. Granite also will provide 75,000 tons of hot mix asphalt and rubberized hot mix asphalt from its Bradshaw hot plant near Sacramento to pave the new roadway, "ensuring high-quality materials and efficient delivery." "This project, located near Sacramento and within Granite's market, highlights our partnership with Caltrans District 03," said Carter Rohrbough, Granite VP of Regional Operations. "The Nevada County Transportation Commission identified 59 collisions in this corridor over three years, with more than half due to congestion," Rohrbough said. "Adding new travel lanes will help reduce congestion and improve access for residents." Granite has a long history with Caltrans, and some of the contracts issued to the company last year include one for $78 million for the demolition and reconstruction of a 320-foot-long concrete bridge in Orange County along the State Route 55 and State Route 91 corridor. Caltrans also issued Granite a $66 million contract last year for the construction of two new precast girder bridges in Visalia, California. One will be a two-span structure over SR 99 and the other a single-span structure over Union Pacific Railroad tracks. The project also includes four new on/off ramps and 12 new retaining walls featuring cast-in-place concrete, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls and soldier pile walls with timber lagging. Granite also won a $38 million contract from Caltrans last year for work on the eastbound and westbound sections of the Cactus City Rest Area near Coachella, California. The contractor's work includes demolition of existing structures, earthwork, grading, new drainage installation, ramp and parking lot paving and new facilities construction. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Widen Shoulders, Construct Two-way Left-turn Lane, Rehabilitate Pavement and Drainage Systems, and Upgrade Lighting, Signs, Guardrail, and Traffic Management System (Tms) Elements, and Add Wildlife Crossing.
