The Saint Louis Zoo is seeking qualified contractors to submit proposals to preform stabilization work to an existing retaining wall on the south side of the Elephant Management Facility. A 70- foot-long section of the retaining wall, constructed in 1998, has developed some large diagonal cracks and a section of the wall is visibly out of plane near a heavy steel swing gate. The gate on the out-of-plane wall is functional and no corrective measures to re-plumb this wall are needed, only stabilization. A recent architectural and structural review has recommended stabilizing the retaining wall with 15 geotechnical turnbuckle anchors at 5 ft o.c. of varying depths and staggered heights. The wall will be tied to another gunite retaining wall in the adjacent elephant habitat. The distance between these two retaining walls is +/- 20'-0 and is filled with soil, plants and trees that form a visual barrier between the public view of the habitat and the Elephant Management Facility. To help relieve hydrostatic pressure on the wall, the scope also includes drilling weep holes at 6'-0" o.c. See Attachment 1 & 2 for additional information.
