The Timpas Picnic Ground is situated near Timpas Creek which was the first source of water for Santa Fe National Historic Trail travelers leaving the Arkansas River heading southwest. The Metcalf Ranch, previously located at this site, served as a stagecoach station. The _ mile loop nature trail will take you to Timpas Creek and back. Stone markers indicate where the Santa Fe National Historic Trail passes through the area. Hikers and Horseback riders can also follow a 3-mile section of the trail to Sierra Vista Overlook. This picnic ground is open year-round. The site is popular with visitors interested in the area's history and sees light to moderate visitor use throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons.
