Mechanical knockdown and piling of burnt trees to create safe conditions and plantable spots for 2026 planting program in two 2023 wildfires (R31391 and R31581). A total of 234.6ha was surveyed in post-free growing stands in these fires in 2024 and found to have poor natural regeneration. These blocks received prescriptions for knockdown and piling site prep followed by planting planting. Some additional area from surveys in previous years with site prep and planting prescriptions has also been added to the contract. This work is funded through the Forest Investment Program (FIP). Mechanical site preparation of 16 treatment units, approximately 214 hectares, to create plantable areas for a 2026 planting program. Treatment units are composed of treed stands, approximately 20-30 years old, that were burnt in recent wildfires (2 in 2018 and 14 in 2023). Portions of these stands remain standing while some areas have fallen over. Site prep is to take the form of knockdown and windrowing of dead and dying trees. Windrows width must be as close to 2m as possible, creating plantable corridors between windrows a minimum of 4m wide. Equipment is required to have wide tracks (floatation specific tracks) or machine size (weight) that has low ground PSI to prevent Soil compaction and Displacement and an attachment that can knockdown and pick-up and/or push debris to pile in windrows. Preferable machinery is a bulldozer, minimum size comparable to a Caterpillar D6. All units are accessed off of the 4000 Forest Service Road and are within a 3hr drive from Smithers.
