FLINT, MI -- Flint officials want to hire two engineering companies to draw up plans for replacing two of the city's most deteriorated bridges, including one that serves as a primary route to Hurley Medical Center. Members of the City Council gave initial committee approval to contracts with Rowe Professional Services and Wade Trim during committee meetings on Aug. 20, the next step in replacing the bridges on Grand Traverse Street and Western Road. Both contracts still require approval in a regular council meeting. Construction isn't expected until at least 2027. Documents provided to council members on Wednesday say that Western Road bridge over Kearsley Creek was selected by the state Department of Transportation for construction in the 2027 fiscal year. A review of the Grand Traverse bridge over the Flint River did not include a construction date estimate, and the city did not immediately comment on when work might begin. City Engineer Abdul Khandker said both bridges, as well as several others in Flint, are in very bad condition, raising the potential for issues like falling concrete. Plans call for the bridge superstructures -- the portion of bridges above ground level -- to be replaced. Khandker estimated the cost of replacing the Western Road bridge at roughly $2 million with the Grand Traverse span expected to cost roughly $3.3 million.
