Renovation of a library in Boston, Massachusetts. Completed plans call for the renovation of a library.
**As of December 10th, 2025 , this project has not yet been awarded. A timeline for the award has not yet been established.** The City of Boston, acting by the Trustee of the Public Library of the City of Boston, hereinafter referred to as the Awarding Authority, hereby invites proposals for "BPL Central Library Retail Tenant" All proposers for this project are subject to all applicable provisions of law and in accordance with the terms and provisions of the contract documents entitled: BPL Central Library Retail Tenant. Question Deadline 09/22/2025 at 2:00 PM ET Direct all questions regarding this event via email to Jane Sproul at business@bpl.org. The subject line of any email communication must be labeled "EV00016265, BPL Central Library Retail Tenant - Questions" The Boston Public Library (BPL) is issuing this request for proposals (RFP) in an eAort to identify, select and partner with a highly motivated entity to provide retail/activation services to the public in the Central Library's Boylston St Building. The BPL is dedicated to serving the cultural, educational, and informational needs of the City and Commonwealth. It believes in an inclusive community propelled by curiosity, connection and the pursuit of knowledge - successful proposals will clearly outline their adjacency to the library's mission. The Boylston St Building (previously referred to as the Johnson Building) completed a large scale renovation in 2016, successfully creating a modern, open environment reflecting the needs and interests of a 21st century library. The available retail space is located on the corner of Boylston and Exeter Streets and is a relatively seamless part of the first floor, inclusive of a retractable demising wall allowing free flow of library patrons into the retail space when desired. Floor to ceiling windows on Boylston and Exeter Street make the space highly visible from the sidewalk and it is the Library's intent that the successful proposal will oAer a design concept that will help connect the Library to the city street and neighborhood. The site is located at 700 Boylston Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02116. The land is owned by the City of Boston, and comprises 132,910 square feet. On the land sits the Central Library in Copley Square which is made up of the historic 1895 McKim building and an existing 425,690 square foot, seven-story structure built in 1972 known as the Boylston St building. The intent of this space is that it be a part of the larger entrance area and that the Library and tenant areas are integrated by a porous border and are visually united when both are open and operational. When one or the other spaces is closed, they will be separated by a hanging glass sliding/stacking partition system. Base Building Documents _ Base building documents are available to all interested proposers. Proposers are encouraged to review all base building specifications, which may impact their proposed tenant improvements _ Requests for drawings and/or specifications are to be directed to (to be determined) _ Tenant architects, engineers, and contractors are to field verify all installed conditions prior to proceeding with their work.
