Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge - Roundabout Construction The roundabouts shall be constructed per the applicable procedures described as follows. Clearing and grubbing will be performed by others. Contractor will be responsible for the following items, site survey, geotextile fabric, base and gravel materials, concrete, welded wire fabric, base and top course paving, pavement markings, hydroseeding, and erosion control by installing silt fence at the entire perimeter of the construction areas. The applicable details shown on the attached drawing set shall be followed by the contractor. Roundabout Pavement Pavement for the roundabout shall comply with the following requirements. Bituminous concrete paving shall be placed and compacted. Submission of the job mix formula for the bituminous concrete shall be the responsibility of the Contractor, and shall be submitted to the Contracting Officer for approval. Pavement testing shall be performed by the contractor. Field samples of bituminous pavements shall be taken by Contractor for testing. Testing of Pavement for density shall be performed using nuclear methods in accordance with ASTM D 2950. Compaction densities shall be between 92 percent and 96 percent. The onsite field representative shall determine the locations for the compaction tests. Asphalt Top Course Asphalt top course materials shall be mix type SM 9.0A meeting the Virginia Department of Transportation specifications section 211.01. Asphalt Base Course Asphalt base course materials shall be mix type IM 19.0A meeting the Virginia Department of Transportation specifications section 211.01. Asphalt Tack Course Tack coat shall be emulsified asphalt grade meeting AASHTO M 140 or AASHTO M 208 requirements. Concrete Use 4,000 PSI concrete with welded wire fabric (WWF) installed at mid depth. WWF shall be 4-inch by 4-inch wire spacing grid size, wire size W4 x W4, 14' x 10' flat sheets, meeting American Society For Testing And Materials (ASTM) A185 requirements. Wire strength shall be 65,000 pounds per square inch (PSI). Pavement Markings Paint material shall be a fast-drying, waterborne, nonleaded, acrylic or modified acrylic resin paint in accordance with Type A per Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Road Specifications Section 246.03. Paint shall be factory mixed, quick drying and non-bleeding type. Color shall be as per VDOT requirements. Striping, arrows, lane markers and stop bars shall be provided with paint containing reflective additive. Thermoplastic Pavement Marking Material shall conform to Type B, Class 1 per VDOT Section 246.03. Sweep dust and debris before applying pavement markings. Apply paint striping as indicated with suitable mechanical equipment to produce uniform straight edges. Apply not less than two (2) coats at manufacturer's recommended rates of application. Protect pavement markings until completely dry in accordance with manufacturers recommendations. Construct two roundabouts, one at Beach Road and one at D Dike Road area at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), 8231 Beach Rd, Chincoteague, VA 23336.
