The council voted 5-1, with councilman David White in opposition. City Manager Bryan Woods said around $1.5 million already has been spent at Veterans Park and anticipates that $500,000 would be unrecoverable. But the rest could be used for any future projects at the location, Woods said. The multimillion-dollar baseball complex at Midtown was previously proposed by Thomas Rodgers, Southern Roots developer, who said it would include nine all-turf fields with one field being a 3,800-seat stadium equipped to host a summer league or professional team. The Brazos Valley Bombers, a Texas Collegiate League baseball franchise, had planned to move into the new facility at Veterans Park in 2027 after its relationship with the city of Bryan and Travis Field was ended earlier this season. The team will play at several Brazos Valley area fields in the summer of 2026, but it's uncertain if the Midtown fields would be ready in time for the 2027 season. Rodgers made it clear that he wanted to host the Bombers at the new complex in 2027. Woods said the city and its partners are doing the best they can to have a field open in 2027 or provide an alternative. "We're trying to explore what scenarios would allow for us to potentially open a field in Midtown by the same date based on the fact that we wouldn't necessarily be having to start and do the significant site work that we would be doing on Veterans," Woods said. "In theory, if we could start a similar time with the main body of construction over there than we could in Veterans, then maybe it's possible, but I would say in any of these scenarios where we don't move forward with the Veterans project as previously directed that we're considering options to help the Bombers adjust for not being able to play on a constructed field by the city until 2028." Woods also confirmed that Bombers staff can ask Texas A&M University and College Station ISD for help in finding a home. "We are confident College Station will explore alternative options including grant support [and] temporary access to existing 2,000-plus seat facilities in the Aggieland area. We trust our partners at the city of College Station as we plan for a permanent home for the Bombers for decades to come," Bombers founder and co-owner Uri Geva said. The proposed Midtown complex would have batting cages, pitching tunnels, a weight room and has potential for outdoor gathering areas, sports courts, a community pool, walking trails and dining options. The Southern Roots proposal requested a donation or lease of 80 acres with the option to purchase or lease an extra 20 acres for future growth, which leaves around 100 acres of developable land for businesses that could contribute to the Midtown Small Area Plan. "We're going to end up getting more than we had originally envisioned for less money and a location that is as close to the original vision as you could get. I think it's a good idea to continue to pursue this," councilman Mark Smith said. Councilwoman Melissa McIlhaney said Veterans Park was a less-than-ideal site for what was needed for the baseball fields. "I'm excited that we have a new opportunity in Midtown, whether we build it or work with a partner. I think Midtown is where this project needs to happen," McIlhaney said. As of now the complex is said to partner with and host the following organizations: College Station Little League, BCS Outlaws, Crusade baseball program, local tournaments, HOA receptivity, TurtleBox Audio, MLB players, local bananaball tournaments and local high school baseball coaches.
