A. Rock excavation shall include removal and disposal of the following: all rock material in beds, ledges, unstratified masses, conglomerate deposits, and boulders of rock material that exceed 1 cu. yd. for bulk excavation or 1/2 cu. yd. for footing, trench, and pit excavation that cannot be removed by rock excavating equipment equivalent to the following in size and performance ratings, without systematic drilling, ram hammering, or blasting: 1. For general excavation, a Caterpillar D-8 tractor with a single tooth ripper, or equivalent equipment, is considered conventional equipment. 2. For trench excavation, a Caterpillar 325 excavator with a medium stick and a rock ripping bucket, or equivalent equipment, is considered conventional equipment. B. If material is encountered which the CONTRACTOR believes cannot be excavated by conventional equipment, the ENGINEER shall be immediately notified. The CONTRACTOR shall provide performance specs of the specified conventional or equivalent equipment, identify the margins of the rock mass, and demonstrate the equipment's inability to remove the rock. If the rock cannot be avoided, and the ENGINEER confirms in writing that the specified conventional equipment cannot perform the excavation, the excavation shall be considered rock excavation.
