Two 18-inch Return Activated Sludge (RAS) sludge lines connect clarifiers No. 1 and 2 to the East Plant RAS Wet Well. A 90-degree elbow section of sludge line No. 2 has developed a small leak and needs to be replaced. The District has decided to replace the gate valve and a similar gate valve on the sludge line that connects to clarifier No. 1 as both gate valves have reached the end of their useful lives. The selected contractor will need to bulkhead the 18-inch sludge lines at the RAS Wet Well. The line shall be bulkheaded by installing an inflatable plug or other means and methods determined by the selected contractor. The wall immediately to the north of the sludge line that serves clarifier No. 2 was constructed after the installation of the sludge line and the wall partially encloses the gate valve and the elbow by approximately 2 to 3 inches and 10 to 12 inches respectively. The selected Contractor will need to remove that concrete in order to remove the existing valve and elbow. Based on the above, the selected contractor will do the following work generally: o Bulkhead East Plant RAS Wet Well connections o Furnish, remove, and install 18-inch partially concrete-encased steel RAS piping elbow associated with valve No. 2 o Furnish, remove, and install gate valve No. 1 o Furnish, remove, and install gate valve No. 2 The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) has a strong commitment to Small, Veteran, Women, and Minority (SWMBE) businesses. To encourage SWMBE participation, MMSD has established procurement goals of 13% for MBE's, 5% for SBE/VBE's, and 2% for WBE's. Firms interested in fulfilling these goals must be certified. MMSD offers its own Small Business certification.
