In 2025, the City of Keene discovered the invasive red pine scale insect (Matsucoccus resinosae) in a red pine tree in Wheelock Park. This discovery prompted a City-wide assessment of vulnerable areas of forest containing planted red pine trees. After the 1938 hurricane, Keene, along with many other municipalities in the region, planted many acres of red pine. These trees are now nearly 100 years old and, in many cases, have not been thinned or managed according to forest management best practices. These poorly tended monocultures of red pine are now faced with the invasive red pine scale, and we have made the decision to preemptively harvest the pine before it begins to rapidly decline and become a more complicated problem for the City. The Dinsmoor Woods Project involves clearcutting 7.22 acres of red pine plantation and selectively removing red pine on an additional 2.14 acres where it is part of a mixed species forest. Showing will begin at the parking lot of the Jonathan Daniels Preschool on Thrasher Lane. 227 Maple Ave, Keene, NH 03431. The goal is to rapidly and effectively remove the red pine before it begins to decline in health. This will be a unique logging project since it will have to work around significant public infrastructure and timing considerations.
