The Water Plant has 10 multimedia filters. The underdrain systems of filters have multiple functions including:-Provide structural support to the filter media-Collect the filtered water and deliver it to the clear-wells for storage and pumping. - Provide the basis for how the backwash system will function. The current underdrain system for the 1933 filters was installed in 1978. The Water Plant has not had performance issues (operationally or water quality) with the filters. However, the typical life expectancy of an underdrain system is 30-50 years. Additionally, the lead time for a typical underdrain project could take up to 2-3 years to design and install. Failure in the underdrain could reduce the water plant capacity up to 22% and could affect the water quality produced. For 2027 through 2028, it is proposed to rebuild filters 1-4 by replacing the underdrain and media at an estimated cost of $5 million. The project is included in the City's 2026-2035 Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
