NICK GRAHAM / STAFF Middletown will install electric vehicle charging stations across several city-owned properties using grant funding that will cover the full cost of the project. City council recently approved a contract with Donnellon McCarthy Enterprises for an amount not to exceed $1,112,396.14. The project will be fully reimbursed through an OKI Carbon Reduction Grant, which provides up to $1.5 million in funding. The contractor submitted the lowest bid on May 27, according to City Manager Ashley Combs. Charging stations will be installed at the following locations: Fifteen Level 2 charging stations at three locations in Smith Park Five Level 2 charging stations at the city building Two DC fast charging stations in the downtown parking lot behind Triple Moon Coffee Company Two Level 2 charging stations at Jacot Park Project costs will initially be paid from the city’s capital fund and reimbursed through the grant, Combs said. ‘What’s more American than a band concert?’: Recreation of Armco performance set for Middletown Statewide push for EV infrastructure The project comes as electric vehicle infrastructure continues to expand across Ohio. A Sheetz planned for Renaissance Pointe recently received an $836,988 grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation to install EV charging stations at 5999 Ohio route 122. The company will contribute a $250,009 match, bringing the total project to $1,086,997. In the latest round of funding through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, ODOT awarded $51 million statewide, with an additional $26 million in private matching funds from companies including Aldi, Love’s Travel Stops, Tesla, United Dairy Farmers and Sheetz. Planned signs at Middletown railroad crossings to ease downtown congestion when there is a train “Every dollar invested in Ohio strengthens economic opportunity, from construction to long-term operation,” ODOT Director Pamela Boratyn said. “Backed by Ohio’s strong automotive and manufacturing sector, these projects position our communities to compete and grow for decades to come while expanding transportation options for Ohioans.” Future EV charging sites funded through the program are expected to include at least four ports capable of delivering 150 kilowatts each, along with nearby amenities such as restrooms and food options. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2027, with many sites expected to open by the end of that year. As of 2026, Ohio has 19 operational National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure stations, with 12 more expected to be completed by the end of the year. There are currently 126,212 registered electric vehicles in Ohio, a number that continues to grow. In September 2025, EV adoption reached 5% for the first time, meaning one in 20 newly registered vehicles in the state was electric. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The work will consist of the installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Systems at four locations in the City of Middletown.
