Refrigeration: Effective January 1, 2026, EPA regulations prohibit new walk-in cooler installations using high-GWP refrigerants (like R-404A/R-507), requiring a shift to low-GWP alternatives, typically under 300 GWP. The transition favors A2L refrigerants (e.g., R-454A, R-454C, R-455A) due to federal AIM Act HFC phasedowns. Also GWP Limits: New remote condensing units (walk-ins) must use refrigerants with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) below 300. : options such as R-454A or R-454C. System Requirements: New installations require enhanced safety measures, including potential leak detection, specialized ventilation, and updated safety valves. Leak Repair/Tracking: The EPA is lowering the threshold for refrigerant leak inspection and tracking from 50 pounds to 15 pounds, meaning smaller systems will now require strict compliance monitoring. Cooler: Reuse existing refrigeration from existing on new cooler, must take care of unit appropriately when demolition begins. Installer responsible for damage.
