The University of Southern Mississippi is seeking bids from qualified manufacturers to supply and install a power generation unit that combines micro-wind turbines and photovoltaic cells to create electricity in a relatively small footprint. The system should be a tree-shaped, electricity production system capable of producing 7.5 kW of electricity under ideal conditions. It should consist of 24 micro-wind turbines (each 300 W) and 24 photovoltaic cells (each 36 W). Sixteen of the micro-wind turbines should have affixed photovoltaic units with a surface area of 29.5 cm2. The system should resemble a tree with four metallic trunks or branches. Specifications include double blade construction with a vertical axis, a synchronous microgenerator with permanent magnets, electronic regulation with an integrated microprocessor, a threshold wind speed for power generation of 2.5 m/s, a maximum sustained wind speed of 43 m/s, and encapsulation for resistance to rain, sand, and snow.
