The project involves investigation, planning, and future cleanup of contaminated sediments and soils within the Lower Neponset River Superfund Site, which includes a 3.7-mile stretch of the river and adjacent floodplains. Field studies have identified elevated levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other hazardous substances affecting river sediments and surrounding areas, including residential, commercial, industrial, and public lands such as the Neponset River Greenway. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting ongoing studies and community engagement to determine appropriate remediation strategies. As of April 8, 2026, further information regarding a design firm has not yet been established. Construction is expected to start in the winter of 2026 or spring of 2027.
