The work consists of replacing the gym ceiling at Woodglen School. The scope is to address ongoing concerns with the existing suspended acoustical ceiling system, which includes a suspended metal grid supporting heavy Tectum ceiling boards, batt insulation on top of the boards, and 2'x4' lay-in T12 fluorescent lighting fixtures in the grid. The boards have been falling when impacted by game balls, raising safety concerns. The new ceiling design calls for complete demolition of the existing suspended ceiling grid and Tectum board system, transitioning the space to an exposed, painted structure appearance typical of gymnasiums. Upon demolition, the trusses, wood joists, and gable end walls will be exposed. The gable walls, which have two attic vents, will be infilled with matching CMU and EIFS wall construction and painted on the interior side. The newly exposed wood joists will be infilled with new batt insulation matching the joists' depth, sheathed with a continuous wall covering, and painted. The new interior wall cover will be an acoustical product for sound absorption, and the exposed structural steel roof trusses will also be painted. Existing suspended basketball nets and speakers, hung from the steel trusses, are to remain in place with the new ceiling design.
