The project consists of replacing the existing Navigation Lock 1 Bridge at Bonneville Lock and Dam with a new fixed, single-span steel girder bridge on a new alignment, along with partial demolition of the existing bridge. The new bridge will include a concrete deck, two travel lanes, shoulders, and a sidewalk, supported by four built-up steel plate girders. Construction includes new approach roadways tying into the existing alignment, installation of a concrete north abutment with spread footing anchored into rock, and a south abutment supported by drilled shafts. The bridge will span the existing navigation channel and provide increased vertical clearance. Work also includes phased construction to maintain continuous vehicular access to the Bonneville facility, removal of portions of the existing bridge to mitigate seismic hazards, and hazardous material abatement including lead and asbestos removal. Additional requirements involve working within environmental and seasonal constraints and performing barge crane operations near high-voltage power lines.
