The project consists of replacing the existing bridge with a new fixed bridge on a new alignment and providing for partial demolition of the existing bridge. The new bridge will be a single-span steel girder bridge with a concrete deck. The bridge will be 34 feet 4 1/2 inches wide out-to-out and will include two 11-foot travel lanes, two 2-foot shoulders, and a 5-foot sidewalk. The superstructure will consist of four built-up steel plate girders. The replacement bridge will be located immediately downstream of the existing bridge. At its northern terminus, the alignment will fit between the existing bridge and the Bonneville Power Administration transmission tower located to the south. Approach roadways will be constructed to connect the new bridge to the existing roadway alignment. The new bridge will span the existing navigation channel and provide greater under-clearance than the existing bridge. The north abutment will be a concrete stub abutment with a spread footing anchored into rock. The south abutment will be a concrete abutment supported by drilled shafts. To mitigate seismic hazards, portions of the existing bridge will be removed as part of the construction work. The existing bridge provides critical vehicular access to the Bonneville project and must remain open throughout construction, requiring the work to be completed in phases. The work also includes lead and asbestos removal, compliance with environmental and seasonal restrictions, and barge crane lifting operations performed in close proximity to a high-voltage power line.
