The Kankakee LSLR Pilot Project involves the replacement of lead service lines in multiple areas of the City of Kankakee, Illinois, and the surrounding communities of Grant Park, Manteno, Bradley, Bourbonnais, Limestone, and Aroma Park. For this project, galvanized iron service lines that are or were previously downstream of a lead source are considered lead service lines and must be removed and treated as lead pipes. The Owner or Engineer may add or remove addresses within the defined Work Area during the project for a total of approximately 450 service line replacements. Most replacements are expected to be full (both public and private side), with some replacements occurring on only one side. The contractor may only perform replacements at unlisted addresses with Owner or Engineer approval. The contractor is responsible for preconstruction activities (scheduling with customers, preconstruction meetings, completing required agreements and sketches), construction (scheduling, installation of new copper service lines, plumbing, meters, and vaults), and restoration (road, parkway, sidewalk, yard, and interior). The project is funded by an IEPA SRF Loan and requires compliance with all federal, state, and local requirements.
