New construction of a mixed-use development in Kingston, Ontario. Conceptual plans call for the construction of a multi-residential development; office development; and retail development.
Construction of a residential, Commercial and Institutional development on grounds adjacent to the Providence Care Hospital. The site is the campus of the former Kingston Psychiatric Hospital, now the Kingston Provincial Campus. It is a 122 acre site located on the shores of Lake Ontario, west of downtown Kingston. It is bounded by Portsmouth Village on the east, King Street and the campus of St. Lawrence College on the north, and Lake Ontario Park on the west. The Kingston Provincial Campus contains one of the oldest complexes of its type in North America, and the oldest surviving purpose-built asylum in Canada. Established in the 1850s, it incorporates a nationally significant country estate and, within this cultural landscape, adds a variety of high quality buildings and structures constructed over the next half century. The site as a whole has three main components, reflecting the original three farm properties upon which the campus developed. Of these, the central (Cartwright) lot contains the majority of the buildings, landscapes and archaeological sites that represent the cultural heritage resources of greatest significance. TIMELINE: This project is on hold. Official plan, zoning and draft plan of subdivision approval are in place. The first phase of the development is followed separately as Providence Manor. Further plans for the property are undetermined as the province is moving forward with divestment of the property from the provincial portfolio. Projects will be followed as they are identified to proceed to private development. Coverage of this report is discontinued.
