Site work and new construction of a fire / police facility in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Conceptual plans call for the construction of a fire / police facility.
Due to economic growth in development (i.e., baseball stadium, riverfront park, significant increase in residential construction) fire suppression services will be challenged to meet NFPA guidelines for response times which could negatively impact the City's ISO rating without adding another fully staffed facility. Unfortunately these services must be planned for before the demand as construction and apparatus acquisition will take a substantial amount of time. All of the above combined with the increase in call volume, the historic district, new construction materials which burn at a faster rate than older materials necessitate the need to focus on response times, personnel and equipment. The funding in the capital budget allows for the accomplishment of all the phases necessary to complete and occupy the proposed fire station per the findings from the Manitou Study of 2018. Architectural and Engineering services as well as site work are scheduled for FY 2022. Construction will be scheduled for FY 2023. These figures include construction, furniture, fixtures, equipment, and an engine to make the building fully functional. Not included are the personnel costs for manning the additional station. It is proposed that this be completed in phases with the first FY 2023 and then in FY 2024. This will be in the projected personnel cost estimates in the operating budget. The Fire Department currently provides service from two station strategically located within the city limits. As of June 01, 2022, this project is currently in the FY 2023-2027 CIP. Funding for this project is allotted in the city's capital improvement plan for construction FY 2023. A firm timeline has not been established; however, construction is scheduled for Fiscal Year 2023. *Project information, including timeline and contacts, has been obtained through public sources.
