Renovation and addition to an educational facility in Edmonton, Alberta. Completed plans call for the addition of a 6,456-square-foot, one-story above grade educational facility; and for the renovation of a 47,345-square-foot, two-story above grade educational facility.

The RE Phillips building on the University of Alberta Campus is the home to the Trades and Infrastructure Maintenance personnel. The building has undergone miscellaneous modifications and small scale renovations to try to provide the trades with space that suits their needs and duties in the repair and maintaining of the infrastructure on Campus. However the facility has come to the point where in order to provide the necessary work environment and gain efficiency in work flow, a significant modernization and addition of the building is required. The Existing building is approximately 2200 m2 per floor and is proposed to be completely renovated and upgraded in all aspects including floor plan layout, mechanical systems and electrical systems. In order to accommodate the growth of the trades and maintenance staff, a 2nd floor addition is proposed to be constructed above the exterior parking on the west side of the building. This addition will be approximately 600m2. This project will be constructed in phases as the facilities and maintenance staff activities and day to day duties will need to carry on throughout the construction. A phase construction approach will need temporarily relocate departments in the facility as space is constructed and renovated. A critical review of the phasing strategy will need to be undertaken by the Contractor and the University to ensure that service from the trades and staff is not compromised. *Award amount was not released for publication.
