Demolition, site work and new construction of a museum in South Haven, Michigan. Completed plans call for the construction of a 15,000-square-foot, two-story above grade museum; and 3,000-square-foot museum.

As of December 21, 2021, construction is underway and is anticipated to be complete summer 2022. The objective of the proposed improvements at the Michigan Maritime Museum is to expand the regional and community Michigan Maritime Museum impact and enhance the waterfront experience for both locals and visitors. Goals and objectives include a total transformation of the maritime educational and research capability, acquisition and waterfront preservation of the historic Jensen property on the Black River, year round museum campus events and generating greater economic benefits to the City of South Haven. To accomplish this, the site will include new docks, an event tent and event lawn, and various structures on site will be either replaced or improved to meet the needs and desires of boating, history and maritime enthusiasts. The proposed improvements consist of the following: 1) Demolition of the existing museum building 2) Construction of a new, 15,000 sf, two-story museum building with exhibit, educational and retail facilities on the first floor and an exhibit/event venue, offices, a board room and catering kitchen on the second floor. 3) The existing two-story building at the point will be removed and replaced with a 3,000 sf exhibit building with restrooms, a concession kitchen and small craft exhibit capabilities on the first floor with a lookout area on the second floor. 4) The docks and utilities will be updated to meet the current needs of the Michigan Maritime Museum collection of the vessels for On the Water experiences and local boaters. 5) The Jenson Buildings will be elevated 1 foot and preserved on the museum campus to accommodate the proposed site improvements. 6) Site improvements will accommodate visiting museum guests, school and wedding groups, Museum and South Haven Community events using Event Lawns, Courtyards, Boardwalks, Renovated Dock and Pier System, River and Harbor designated lawns, a Lawn Theater and event tent, signage and site lighting.
