To plan, design, and construct water system improvements for the regional San Juan lateral water project to include easements, rights-of-ways, surveying, and archaeological and environmental studies in McKinley and San Juan counties This regional project will include planning, design, improvement, and construction of water lines and related facilities for the Mexican Springs to connect to the San Juan Lateral (transmission supply line) of the Navajo Gallup Water Supply Project. Mexican Springs, along with Sanostee, Two Grey Hills, Newcomb, Sheep Springs, Naschitti, and Tohatchi Chapters are communities located along the proposed transmission pipeline and are teaming to seek funds to connect into this pipeline. Navajo Nation will own the supply line and Navajo Tribal Utility Authority will continue operating and maintaining all new and existing systems. Navajo Nation will be the fiscal agent. The project will provide a reliable water source by developing and enhancing the community water systems in this region as groundwater supplies diminish. The Project will be implemented in 3 Phases for an approximate 4-mile, 10-inch diameter proposed pipeline (pipe lengths and diameters are subject to change upon finalized preliminary engineering report) from the San Juan Lateral to connect to Mexican Springs Chapter's existing water distribution system that currently serves more than 1,500 residents. This project is included in the 2023-2027 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).
