The existing bridge was built in 1963 and is now structurally deficient (4-6-5). It consists of 5 simple spans with two abutments and three piers. It is proposed to replace the bridge with an integral abutment two span continuous structure. It is also proposed to increase the existing vertical clearance from 15 feet to 16.5 feet. The existing curb to curb width is 48 feet. The four travel lanes are 11 feet wide which only provides for two - 2 foot shoulders. There are no sidewalks. At a minimum the bridge needs to be widened to provide 5 foot shoulders for bicycle accomodation. It has not yet been determined if there is a need for one or two sidewalks. Over the next five years. MassDOT expects to invest over $3 billion repairing the Commonwealth’s Bridges. This includes $816 million already programmed in the STIP using BIL’s reauthorization of existing programs, $1.1 billion under BIL’s new Bridge Formula Program, and $1.25 billion in bonding authority under the Commonwealth’s Next Generation Bridge Program.
